As in the Pryor family, the relationships between prostitutes, pimps, madams, clients and the law were never simple. The case of Elmer Poos and his former lover and prostitute Peggy Deaver was no exception.
Poos, a longtime criminal, was on trial for interstate prostitution charges — felony charges, not easily swept under the rug as in old Peoria — and Deaver was a compromised witness against him. Under badgering from the defense attorney, she admitted that she had handed over her earnings as a prostitute to Poos and was still in love with Poos, even after he had taken up with her twenty-two year-old daughter.
